Obituary

Sister Gloria Korhonen, formerly known as Sister Jonathan, died on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 95 years of age and in the 62nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Gloria was born in Astoria, Oregon, to Arvo and Maemi (Matson) Korhonen. She graduated from Baraga Township High School in Baraga, Michigan. She received a Bachelor degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan and a Master of Education degree in Special Education from Wayne State University. She also held certificates in English, applied music and music theory.

Sister Gloria taught in both elementary and high schools in Farmington, Adrian and Port Huron. In 1971, with the closing of Port Huron Catholic High School, she became the music director and liturgist for St. Joseph Catholic Church where she ministered for 47 years. In 2018, she became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian.

Being an amazing musician and composer of music, Sister Gloria shared her talents with not only her parish, but with individuals seeking to improve their musicianship; many becoming professional musicians. She recognized abilities in people; mentoring them, encouraging them and guiding them to reach their potential.

Sister Gloria was an influential and empathic leader in our community. She regularly visited the sick, organized ecumenical choir events and reached out to people of all faiths. In 2006, she received the Woman of Distinction Award from the Michigan Waterways Council of Girl Scouts. In 2016, she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of Port Huron. Her Finnish SISU (determination and perseverance) was an example for all those who knew her. Sister Gloria was committed to the Dominican motto: to Praise, to Bless, to Preach. She will always be remembered for loving unconditionally, valuing all of Creation and working tirelessly for peace and justice.

She is survived by her sister, Elaine Germaine; niece, Kathy (Bob) Forsythe; nephew, Jack Germaine Jr.; several great nephews; her Adrian Dominican Sisters; The Choirs of St. Joseph; Port Huron Catholic High School Alumni; and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth (Phil) Anttila and Murial Lawrence; her nephew, Jonathon Anttila; her niece, Misty Germaine; and her dear friend, Sister Eileen Minges (Sister James Martin).

A Funeral Mass will be offered in the St. Catherine Chapel, on the Adrian Dominican Campus on Thursday, May 9th at 10:30 a.m. Visitation at 6:30 p.m. and Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8th in the St. Catherine Chapel. A Memorial Mass will be offered in Port Huron, at Holy Trinity Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, May 25th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.
