Richard Leroy Simmons, 89, of Port Huron, died Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

He was born May 13, 1935 in Detroit to the late Harvey and Mary Simmons. He married Mary A. Lowe on August 28, 1980 in Detroit.

Richard attended East Detroit High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from March 1955 to March 1957. He worked in the automotive industry for several plastics shops and retired as a truck driver at 62 years old. He belonged to the Fort Gratiot Burtchville Lions Club and collected plastic to make benches that the club donated throughout the community. He volunteered his time at the Maritime Center in Port Huron and was a certified tornado spotter with SkyWarn. His favorite way to travel was by train and he enjoyed visiting Glacier National Park and California. Richard loved camping at outdoor adventure campgrounds, golfing, bowling, helping people who needed a hand, gardening and caring for all his neighbors’ flowers.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary; children, Mary Kay (Mark) Tuckfield, Steven (Jane) Simmons, Therese Simmons, Christopher (Michelle) Simmons and Marie (Edward) Warner; 16 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; sister, Delores “Dee”; and beloved pet, Lola. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Gordon and Harold.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Daniel Anderson will officiate. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
