Craig S Smith
Craig Steven Smith, 64, of Clyde Township, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
He was born June 15, 1960 in Port Huron to the late Eleanor and Richard Smith. Craig graduated from Port Huron Northern High School in 1978 and went on to attend St. Clair County Community College, while simultaneously working at Mueller Brass. He later spent several years living and working in Abilene, Texas.
Following a devastating automobile accident at the age of 22 that left him without the use of his legs, Craig moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and became a certified gunsmith. He eventually made his home in North Street, Michigan to accommodate his needs and his love of the great outdoors. Craig was an avid hunter who enjoyed many seasons in the Upper Peninsula with family and friends. He was equally passionate about fishing and especially loved the Port Hope area. Craig was also a talented bladesmith, who loved creating custom knives for the special people in his life.
He is survived by his fiancé of 15 years, Jeanette Hopkins, her children who Craig loved as his own, Jim (Chelsea) Rumley and Andrea Rumley, and granddaughter, Allison; his siblings, Deborah (Kevin) Harrison, Laura (Jim) Hartzell, Karen (Brian) Bennert; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and his happy, loving, therapy K-9, Kimber. In addition to his parents, Craig was preceded in death by his sisters, Roxanne and Kim.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Reverend Doug Studaker will officiate.
Burial will be in Ruby Cemetery, Clyde Township.
