Bernadette "Bunnie" Anderson
Bernadette “Bunnie” Anderson, 99, of Port Huron, died Saturday, May 3, 2025.
She was born in 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Peter Paul and Mary Simler. She married Lyall Anderson in 1949 in St. James Church in Ferndale. Together they raised four children, Michele, Marilyn, Mark and Mathew.
Bunnie graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Mount Clemens and dedicated more than 70 years to the nursing profession. Her nursing career extended beyond the United States, serving as a volunteer nurse for four and a half years in Papua New Guinea. Following her time abroad, Bunnie returned to the United States and relocated to Florida to be near her aging parents. In Florida, she dedicated her time to volunteering at a health center in Indiantown, providing care to the local Guatemalan migrant community.
Following Hurricane Andrew, Bunnie worked in Homestead, Florida, providing care to the homeless, sick, and injured, living alongside a team of fellow nurses in a tent. After the passing of her father at the age of 96, Bunnie lovingly cared for her mother until her passing at the age of 101. In 2004, she returned to Michigan and settled into a beautiful apartment in her daughter Michele’s home. She remained active in her later years, volunteering at funeral lunches at St. Mary Catholic Church, administering flu shots through the Visiting Nurses Association, and volunteering as an RN with the People’s Clinic for Better Health.
She is survived by her daughters, Michele Theisen and Marilyn Anderson; grandchildren, Jessica (Tom) Wilson, Jennifer (Chip) Allen, and Joshua (Jackie) Rubin; and great-grandchildren, Clay (Savanah) Wilson, Whitney Wilson, Brooklyn Rubin, and Brynn Rubin. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyall; her sons, Mark and Mathew; her son-in-law, Michael Theisen; grandson, Noah Gagneau; her sisters, Pauline Beauchamp and Patricia Ferris; and her brother Peter Simler.
Bunnie will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to service, her devout faith, her deep compassion, and the love she gave to her family and community.
