Joseph Abdou
Joseph M. “Joe” Abdou, 99, of Port Huron, passed away Friday, June 6, 2025.
Joseph Michael Abdou was born January 4, 1926. He was raised by his beloved parents, Thomas L. and Mary Abdou, in a home at the rear of the family’s store at 314 Erie Street. He graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1944, and served as a combat soldier in the US Army during World War II, receiving 2 bronze stars. After a year at Port Huron Junior College, Joe played semi-professional football in Port Huron and Marysville. Joe married the love of his life, Layla, on April 26, 1969, and earlier this year they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary surrounded by family. Joe was a life-long resident of the Port Huron area, and owned and operated many businesses, including the Burk Bar (with his father), a restaurant, the Elmwood Party Store, and most recently the Cigar Rack on Military Street. Joe also owned and trained race horses with his father and was a 72-year member of the Elks.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Layla; sons Thomas J. (Rima) and Michael C. Abdou; and two granddaughters, Chantal and Maryjo. Joe will be remembered for his kind heart, his generous spirit, his ability to see the good in everyone, and above all, for his love for his family. Joe will be deeply missed by his family and he will live on in their hearts.
Visitation will be from 2-8 pm Sunday, June 15, 2025 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025 in St. Stephen Catholic Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. The Reverend Brad Forintos will officiate. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Army and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
