Donald W Herber
Donald Wayne Herber, 84, of Port Huron Township, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026 surrounded by his family.
He was born January 22, 1941 in Port Huron to the late Christian and Elizabeth Herber. Donald graduated from Port Huron High School in 1959 where he made many lifelong friendships.
C. Herber’s Collision was founded by Christian Herber in 1947, and Don proudly carried on the family legacy by taking over the business in 1970. He spent many years working alongside family members and friends, including his son.
Don was called to serve in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves during the Vietnam War and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He enjoyed guiding his platoon of over 70 men.
Don was active in the community, always lending a hand to his friends, family, and customers. He was involved in several clubs and organizations over the years, including: the Moose Lodge, Wills Sainte Claire Museum, and F.O.P. There are countless stories of Don “making it work” for customers who were in a rough spot.
A humble man of God, Don was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a long-time member of St. John’s United Church of Christ. He was an extremely hardworking man and lived a life of kindness, always offering help before you knew you needed it and never asking for a thank you.
Family was an integral part of Don’s life. He would attend sporting events and activities for all his grandchildren with pride in his eyes. His favorite place to be was ‘Up North’ at the cabin, teaching them all how to fish, start boats, and fix anything and everything possible.
He is survived by two children, Chad (Holly) Herber, Valene (Brandon) Helmrich and their mother, Mary Herber; grandchildren, Alexis, Kayla and Colton Herber, Landon, Gavin and Owen Helmrich, and Michael and Wayne; brother, Robert Herber; and several nieces and nephews, including his nephew Jerry Taylor, who has been by his side at the shop for 30 years. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Molly.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and George Taylor; and sister-in-law, Sandy Herber.
Visitation will be held from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Dr. Roxie Davis will officiate.
