James Rankin

James Matthew Rankin, 34, of University Park, Maryland, formerly of Port Huron, died Thursday, February 5, 2026 after a brief illness.

He was born May 19, 1991 in Port Huron to James P. and Salena Lisa Rankin.

James was currently student teaching at the University of Maryland while working towards earning his PhD. In his younger years he was involved in scouting. He had a love for learning and reading. James loved animals and enjoyed spending time with his two dogs.

He is survived by his parents, James P. and Salena Lisa Rankin; sister, Cassie (Jay) Gravley; niece, Maddie Gravley; grandparents, James A. and Ruth Rankin; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and former spouse and friend, Jillian Randall. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Priscilla Freiger and Robert Mertz.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Monday, March 16, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Shaun Laurain will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron Township

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Water Area Humane Society.
