Martha R Coleman
Martha Rose Coleman, 93, of Port Huron, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026. She was enveloped in love, surrounded by family, her pastor, and dear friends as she peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Martha was born June 27, 1932, in Bad Axe to the late Jacob and Mary Stiefel. She married the love of her life, James G. Coleman, on August 8, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Huron. They shared 37 years of marriage before his passing on April 20, 1991. Their love remains a testament to the family they built over generations, and brings comfort in knowing they are now reunited in heaven.
Mrs. Coleman received her bachelor’s degree from Concordia Teachers College in Illinois and her master’s degree in education from Wayne State University. She taught at Trinity Lutheran for 15 years and at Woodrow Wilson Elementary for 23 years, dedicating nearly four decades to shaping the lives of her students. Teaching was a lifelong passion that she often said kept her young well into her 90s.
Martha was steadfast in her faith and a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church for more than 35 years. In 1996, Martha became a “snowbird” and spent her winters in Florida, where she was an associate member of Hope Lutheran Church in Hudson. She was a source of comfort, prayer, and guidance within her church communities.
She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society, participated in Bible study groups, and regularly donated to various veteran organizations in honor of her late husband. Martha enjoyed playing cards, treasured time with family and friends, and created a lifetime of cherished memories with those she loved. She was known for her kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to others, living out the words “love thy neighbor” each day. To know her was to love her, and to be loved by her was a true blessing.
Martha is survived by her three children, Deborah Coleman, James (Lisa) Coleman, and Timothy (Lynn Porrett) Coleman; eight grandchildren, Maria (Jeff) Brinkey, Katie Stroud, Amy, Lilly, Jacqueline, Sam (Hayley), and Brian Coleman, and Brett (Dani) Dionne; fourteen great-grandchildren, who loved their Nana; many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins; her special niece, Kay Lockert; and special friends, Aleta Day, June Haack, and Jean Weston. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James; her brothers, Jacob, Peter, William, and Robert Stiefel; and her sisters, Catherine Lockert, Sophie Conners, Caroline Harmon, and Mary J. Williams.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026 in Faith Lutheran Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Mark Huff will officiate.
