Roy E Caughel

Roy Ellis Caughel, 74, of East China, died Friday, July 24, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 14, 1952 in Goodells to the late Cecil and Ila Mae Caughel. He married Kathleen Gerlach on October 25, 1980 in Port Huron and she preceded him in death on April 17, 2020 after almost 40 years of marriage.

Roy graduated from Port Huron High School. He worked in maintenance at Port Huron Hospital for several years and then as an operator at Cargill Salt until his retirement. Roy was a lifelong outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, especially fishing at Frank's. He was also an avid Detroit Tigers and Lions fan. Roy loved classic rock music and was known for his keen whistling ability.

More than anything, Roy was a family man. He and Kathy enjoyed traveling, especially to Frankenmuth. He was always involved in his children’s lives, and loved coaching their softball and baseball teams and spending time with them.

He is survived by three children, Emilee Caughel (Jake Buckley), Joseph (Nicole) Caughel and Tristin Caughel; two grandsons, Levi Ellis Fagan and Teddy Patrick Caughel; and brother, Gary (Chris) Caughel. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Daniel and Lyle Caughel; and sister, Carolyn Yake.

A memorial visitation will be from 2-4 & 5-7 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Nate Campau, a family friend, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia and Alzheimer’s Association of St. Clair County.
