Steven G Cooper

January 25, 1942 to October 11, 2026

Fair Winds and Following Seas for Steven Grant Cooper, 84, of Port Huron, Michigan, who passed away peacefully on October 11, 2026 at the Blue Water Hospice Home. His love of life, undying optimism, huge grin and touch of mischief in the corner of his eye were with him until the end. His last day was spent surrounded by family and sailing mates, celebrating their true friendship with “Super Cooper.”

Steve was born January 25, 1942, in Detroit to the late Lee and Marilyn (Winter) Cooper. He grew up in Detroit while spending summers in Lakeport at the family cottage, where he later raised his own family. He built a successful stainless-steel business, High Seas, supplying the marine industry and joining his career to his passion for boating and the water.

He married Diane Miller on August 26, 1978 and together they raised three children: Lindsay, Steven and Eric. Later in life, Steve became a great “pappy” to 5 wonderful grandchildren: Fiona, Alexis, Gavin, Liam and Landon.

Steve loved being on the water. He developed a passion for sailboat racing, competing in many events on the Great Lakes and beyond. He raced to Mackinac Island nearly every summer, earning “Old Goat” status in 1990 after his 25th race, and eventually completing 43 races. When he wasn’t sailing, Steve was often power boating, fostering a legacy of lake life. His love of the water was only surpassed by his love of family, and that is how we will remember him.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Diane; daughter, Lindsay (Mark) Soule; two sons, Steven (Kristen) Cooper and Eric (Julie) Cooper; 5 grandchildren; siblings, Joyce (Henry) Truett, Nancy (Paul) Brummund and Phyllis Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2-4 & 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026 at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Deacon Dennis Crimmins will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeport Cemetery, Burtchville Township.

Steve was passionate about local parks & recreation, so those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider donating in Steve’s name to the Community Foundation of St. Clair County to be used for their park projects.
