Thomas Charles Noetzel, Sr, died on September 16, 2012 surrounded by his family.
He was born in 1920 to Eric and Mary Roxanna Noetzel in Sarnia, Ontario and was a life long Port Huron resident. He graduated from Guardian Angel High School in Detroit and earned a BS in engineering from the University of Detroit. He served as a Photographer’s Mate First Class in the US Navy during WWII. Tom married Elaine Chapdelaine on November 9, 1946, after they both returned from the service. She preceded him in death on March 23, 2011 after 65 years of marriage. He worked as chief engineer of Port Huron Paper Company until his retirement in 1975. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Church where he was a Eucharistic minister, and he volunteered at Mid City Nutrition. He was a member of the YMCA for over 45 years and past president of the Blue Water Swim Club. He was a member of the male Shubert Chorus and Barbershop Quartet. Tom was an avid fisherman and loved to play cards. He enjoyed taking pictures of his family and watching their sporting events.
Tom is survived by eight children, Thomas Jr (Debbie) of Fort Gratiot; Mary (Bernie) Selting of Anacortes, WA; Christine Noetzel (Alan VanderGraaff) of Lexington; Paul (Nancy) of Wolverine; Roxane (Ken) Kowalski of St Clair Shores; Annette (Jeff) Kremer of Snowmass Village, CO; Susan (Jim Sneddon) Noetzel of Port Huron; Mark (Liz) of Kamuela, Hawaii; 17 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Joanne Chapdelaine of Lapeer, sister-in-law Sira Chapdelaine of Tampa and several nieces and nephews, and dear friends and caregivers, Mary Lou and Pat.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 27, at 10 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Huron. Military honors will follow at the Allied Veterans Cemetery under auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Visiting will be at Karrer-Simpson Funeral home on Wednesday, September 26, from 6 to 9 pm. A rosary will precede visiting at 5:30 pm.
