Alicia Sanchez

December 20th, 1946 to December 17th, 2012
Alicia M. Sanchez, age 65 of Port Huron passed away and went home to the Lord on December 17, 2012.

She was born on December 20, 1946 in Mexico City, to Alfonso and Teresa Rubio.

She is the beloved wife of Gilbert E. Sanchez and survived by her daughter, Victoria (Jose) Bueno; son, Gilbert (Kimberly) Sanchez; daughter, Teresa (William) Snell; son, Vicente (Melinda) Sanchez; sister, Elvia (Juan) Rubio; brother, Alfonso (Maria Elena) Rubio; brother, Eduardo (Carma) Rubio and eight grandchildren, Alejandro, Courtney, Gabrielle, Garrett, Zachary, Jonah, Noah and Joshua.

Alicia will be remembered for serving the Port Huron community as Mayor (1991-1993) and as a minority advocate for the Southwest Detroit area. She served in various capacities at New Detroit Coalition, Latino Family Services Inc. and the Michigan Metro Girl Scout Council. She was honored with the State of Michigan 150 First Lady Award, the Hispanic Leader Award given by the New Detroit Coalition and was also inducted in the Wall of Fame at Madonna University, Livonia, MI. Alicia was also a graduate fellow of the National Hispana Leadership Institute.

Visiting hours will be from 2-8 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2012 in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place during the visitation at 7 pm. Pastor Tim Clark of Ross Bible Church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Gift of Life.
