Joseph Hayes

Joseph R. Hayes, 85, of Fort Gratiot died Monday, February 6, 2006, in his home after a short illness. He was born November 9, 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA but has lived here since 1927. Joe married Eunice R. Lamlein June 2, 1947 in Toledo, OH and she preceded him in death June 28, 1985. He married Pauline E. Arebalo September 23, 1989 in Port Huron. Joe was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II serving in both the Phillipines and the Pacific receiving several battle citiations including the Bronze Star. After service he was employed at Mullins Roofing Co. before joining Mueller Brass Co. from where he retired. He then joined Target as one of its first employees locally, helping to open the Ft. Gratiot location. Joe was a member of St. Joseph Church and Charles A. Hammond Post #8, American Legion. He was an avid sports fan who loved to follow the Red Wings, Tigers and the Chicago Cubs. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; his sons, Fred C. (Sandi) Hayes of St. Clair and Joseph D. (Ardie) Hayes of Port Huron; step-children, David (Glenda) Cogswell of Riley Center and Shelly (Robert) DuBosh of Gig Harbour, WA; his grandchildren, Fred Hayes, Becky (Jason) Betcher, Dann (Heather) Hayes, Scott (Andrea) Hayes, Julie (Bud) Cichoracki, James Hayes, Zachary DuBosh, April Dawn Cogswell, Sean Cogswell and Kevin ( Dawn) Cogswell; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Church. The Rev. Joseph Gagnon, Senior Priest, will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military rites under auspices of a U.S. Army detachment from Detroit. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Rosary will be held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Church or the American Cancer Society.
