Mabel Burkart Smith

Mabel C. Burkart Smith, 93, of Port Huron, wonderful mother and grandmother, died May 2, 2007. She was born August 14, 1913 in Detroit to Nellie and Tom Jarvis. At the age of 7 she and her family moved to Port Huron where Mabel attended and graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1931. Mabel married Frank E. Burkart June 14, 1935. Frank died October 27, 1962. She later married Edward Smith in 1972 and moved to South Bend, IN where she resided for 23 years. She returned to Port Huron in July of 1995. Mabel was a founding member of St. Mary Church, member and past president of the League of Catholic Women, member of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, past president of St. Mary's Altar Society and past member of the Legion of Mary. Mabel is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Joe) DeMaria, Nan Grebenok, Barbara (Doug) Nelson and Sally Krafft; her brother, Robert E. Jarvis; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; cousin, Rose Carpo and lifelong friend, Charlotte Jackman. She was predeceased by her husbands, her son, Robert G. Burkart, her brother, Edwin Jarvis and her sister, Helen Keeslar. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Church, Port Huron. Rev. Fr. Simeon T. Iber, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at the church. Memorials, in Mabel's memory, may be made to St. Mary's Capital Campaign.
