Viola Schmidt

Viola G. Schmidt, 86, of Northampton, MA but formerly of Port Huron, died Friday, November 16, 2007 in Northampton. She was born July 1, 1921 in Port Huron, daughter of the late Charles and Regina Stanley and lived here until 2006 when she moved to Massachusetts. Vi married Benjamin E. Schmidt May 17, 1942 in Port Huron and he preceded her in death July 11, 1986. Vi was a 1939 graduate of St. Stephen High School. She was employed at various stores in Port Huron including Thom McAnn's and S. S. Kresge Co. She was also a volunteer librarian at St. Joseph School for 22 years. She enjoyed collecting artifacts. She is survived by her sons, Richard (Glenna) of Sumter, S.C., Edward (Mickey) of Las Vegas, Michael of El Paso, TX, Robert (Lori) of Northampton, MA, Jeffrey of Columbia SC and Gary (Pam) Schmidt of Las Vegas; 22 Grandchildren; 29 Great Grandchildren; her sister, Marjory Meismer of Cumberland, MD and several nieces and nephews. Vi was preceded in death by her sisters: Dolores (Chick) Collard, Bernadine Newberry, Beulah Powers, Durcilla Stanley and Ceceilia Shortt. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Church. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber, Pastor, will preside. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Her six sons will be her pallbearers. Visiting hours are 2 to 4:00 and 6 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and Wednesday at the church beginning at 9:15 a.m. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials, in Vi's memory, may be made to St. Mary Church
