Michael Julian Vanlerberghe, 83, of Marysville, died January 15, 2014.
He was born November 8, 1930 in Armada to the late Remi and Alida Vanlerberghe. He married Dorothy Dazer on May 21, 1955 in Port Huron.
He was employed with Grand Trunk Western Railroad for over 35 years, where he was former member and treasurer of the Grand Trunk Recreation Board. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He also was employed for many years for the Port Huron Flags at McMorran Arena. He volunteered at the soup kitchen and was a church altar server. Mike and his wife were cooks at the Marriage Encounter Weekends. He also enjoyed playing cards, polka music, and having coffee with his buddies at the Four Star Restaurant. Mike enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and was an avid Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Marysville Viking fan.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; three daughters, Kathryn (Michael) McShane, Mary Ann (Steve) Kuehl, Carol (Greg) Wright; five grandchildren, Bryan (Ashleigh) McShane, Melissa (Ben) Hale, Megan (Don Ennis) McShane, Mallory and Kelsey Kuehl; three great-grandchildren, Grace, Makenzie and Charlie; sister-in-law, Emma Herbert; brother-in-law, Leonard (Mary Jane) Dazer; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is proceeded in death by his parents; a brother, Archie Vanlerberghe; and two sisters, Margaret Lambert and Madeline Vanlerberghe.
Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2014 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Vanlerberghe will lie in state at Holy Trinity Parish, St. Stephens Catholic Church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January, 20, 2014. The Reverend Joseph Gagnon will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.
Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael McShane, Steve Kuehl, Greg Wright, Bryan McShane, Ben Hale, and Don Ennis.
Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Parish, St. Stephens Catholic Church.
