Archie L. Sams

October 28th, 1928 to October 31st, 2009






Archie L. Sams, 81, of Port Huron, died

October 31, 2009 in Marwood Nursing and Rehab after a long battle

with Parkinson's Disease.

He was born October 20, 1928 in

Packard, KY and has lived in the Port Huron area since 1946. He

married the former Mary J. Kalaf on May 30, 1953 in St. Stephen

Church, Port Huron.

Arch was a graduate of Hazard High

School, Hazard, KY. After school he entered the Army where he served

in Korea during the Korean War. Following his discharge he returned

to Port Huron and joined Mueller Brass Co. for 13 years. He then was

employed with the Port Huron Area School District until 1973 when he

operated his own business, DACA, Inc. in Marysville. In 1982 he

opened SAMS Advertising from where he retired. From 1953 to 1972 he

coached basketball at St. Stephen High School when it was downtown

and later at St. Stephen Grade School in Port Huron Township. He was

also a referee with Michigan High School Athletic Association. Arch

was an avid golfer and reader and enjoyed fishing with his family and

a card game of gin. He also bowled with the Elk's Bowling League.

He was a member of Port Huron Golf Club, Black River Country Club and

Elk's Lodge #343, Port Huron.

He is survived by his wife of 56

years, Mary; children, Pamela J. (Steven) Arnold of Sterling Heights,

Carol S. (Mark) Krainbrink of Port Huron, Steven P. (Paula) Sams of

Charleston, SC and Judith A. (Greg) Reynolds of Ft. Gratiot; sister,

Merza Lee (Don) Martin of Lancaster, KY; grandchildren, Merissa,

Shauna and Chad Krainbrink, Brian and Patrick Arnold, Cody and

Caitlin Reynolds and Matthew and Michael Sams and several nieces and

nephews.

He was preceded in death by his

brothers, Norman, Earl and William Sams.

Funeral services will be held at

10:00 am Wednesday in St. Mary Church, Port Huron. The Reverend

Zbigniew Zomerfeld, Pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Mt.

Hope Cemetery. Arch's grandsons will be his pallbearers. Visitation

will be Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 pm in

Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and on Wednesday at church from 9:00 am

until the service. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm. Tuesday.

Memorials, in Archie's memory, may

be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or St. Mary Church.
