Douglas G. Hinton

Douglas Glenn Hinton, 76, of Fort Gratiot, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024. He was born June 23, 1948, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to the late Norman G. and Julia E. Hinton.

Doug was well-known for his deep connection to hockey. After growing up in Toronto and meeting his high school sweetheart, Sue, Doug played college hockey at Michigan Tech University and later played professionally in Fort Worth, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. When he retired as a player, Doug transitioned to coaching, serving as Assistant Coach at the University of Michigan and then as Head Coach of the Port Huron Flags. Doug eventually made his home in Port Huron with his wife Sue in 1979.

Following his professional coaching career, Doug spent 45 years in the golf industry but continued coaching youth hockey throughout his life. He profoundly impacted the Port Huron hockey community, mentoring countless young athletes. Many of Doug's players went on to inspire others, increasing his influence. He will be remembered for his tough yet caring coaching style, and for prioritizing discipline, character and the development of his players as individuals.

Doug never met a stranger, and he took immense pride in his Port Huron community. He was a long-standing member of the Port Huron Golf Club, and he treasured the lifelong friendships he built there.

Above all, Doug was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sue; their children, Keith, Kevin and Ashley; son-in-law, Joe Gacioch; daughter-in-law, Kim Hinton; and granddaughters, Abby and Emily Hinton.

Doug’s family deeply appreciates the overwhelming support they have received. Memorial arrangements will be announced at a later date.
