Howard D. Kuhn FORT GRATIOT TWP. Howard D. Kuhn, lifelong resident of Fort Gratiot Township, passed away on August 29, 2007 after a long and courageous battle with multiple health problems. Born on April 28, 1922 to Howard and Ada Kuhn, Mr. Kuhn was preceded in death by his brother Rowland and sisters Ella Mae and Alma. He is survived by Eleanor, his beloved wife of 65 years; children, Karen (Dennis) Marone, Port Huron, Kenneth (Pauline) Kuhn, Houghton Lake, Julie (Jim) Warrender of Bradenton, FL and Thomas (Chris) Kuhn, Westland; grandchildren, Dr. Scott Ferguson, Mark Ferguson, Joel Ferguson, Natalie Geffros, Bradley Rowell, Matthew Rowell, Rebecca Sherman, Katina McKibbon, and Kevin Kuhn; as well as 21 great-grandchildren. Mr. Kuhn served in WWII during the Battle of the Bulge, deemed to be the turning point of the war. He received the Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star of Meritorious Service. He was a very humble man and never spoke of his war experiences in spite of the fact that he was credited with saving many men of his Platoon serving on the front line. A fiercely loyal American citizen, he proudly displayed his American Flag daily in spite of his infirmities. After the war, Mr. Kuhn was employed by the State of Michigan and spent his career working on the Blue Water Bridge, a place which his grandchildren fondly called "Grampa's Bridge". In 1962, along with his brother, Rowland Kuhn, the Kuhn Brothers Kartway was opened on 24th Ave. in Fort Gratiot Township. For the next 15 years, the Kartway expanded to be Kuhn Brothers Funland and included not only the Go-Karts, but a large Kiddie Land, Miniature Golf Course, picnic area, Batting cages and more. One of his greatest pleasures was the day each year devoted to the children of Woodlands Developmental Center coming for a special outing. In 1976, Mr. Kuhn began spending his winters in Bradenton, FL, a place he loved for its sunshine and warm temperatures. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, he rode motorcycles and or a beautiful motor scooter with his wife, Eleanor in a side car until his early '80s. Also an avid baseball fan, Mr. Kuhn played softball in Florida until into his '70s. He was a lifelong Tiger fan. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1st at Hillside Wesleyan Church with Pastor Doug Studaker officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday.
