Margaret Wakeen

Margaret Rose Wakeen, 84, of Fort Gratiot, passsed away Monday, October 29, 2007. Margaret was born January 27, 1923 in Corunna, Ontario to the late Leo and Marie Byrne. She fell in love with and married Paul John Wakeen of Port Huron on September 20, 1949 after meeting him by chance at a local dance hall in Ontario. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage and shared a great friendship. Sadly, he passed away, and she lost her life partner on October 6, 2006. Margaret was a warm, giving, gracious and compassionate woman. These qualities served her well when she decided to enroll in nursing school at St. Joseph's in Chatham, Ontario. She graduated as a registered nurse. She started her career at St. Joseph's in Sarnia and then transferred to the maternity ward at Port Huron Hospital. She was a highly dedicated nurse and took great pride in caring for others. She was also an avid bowler, and at one time, an active member of Town Hall and St. Mary Church. However, her greatest joy was taking care of her family. She lived an unselfish life and loved unconditionally. Margaret will be remembered for her absolute love for her family, kindness, sense of humor and her smile that would warm your heart. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. Margaret is survived by her three daughters, Katherine (Mike) Lentz of Lynn, Karen Schaffer of Nashville, TN and Kristine Wakeen of Grosse Pointe; her sister, Maryann (David) Johnston; two grandchildren, Sarah Lentz of Los Angeles and Laura (Brett) Sivec of Romeo and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 30 at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Margaret's funeral will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 31 at St. Mary Catholic Church with visiting beginning at 9:15 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Lentz, David Johnston, Ken Wakeen, Scott Reed, Bret Sivec and Kazem Mirkhani. Memorials, in Margaret's memory, may be made to the St. Clair County Council on Aging.
