Betty L Williams

Betty Louise Walker Williams of Port Huron, Michigan died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 25, 2016.

Betty was born April 30, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Lynne DeWitt and Nelle Simpson Walker. The family later moved to Flint, Michigan where she spent her school years. After one year at Alma College in Michigan she transferred to Duke University where she graduated with a BA degree. At Duke she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

She spent her summers studying Spanish at Middlebury College at Breadloaf, Vermont, and at the University in Mexico City, Mexico. She also lived for a time in Santa Barbara, California; Chillicothe, Ohio; and Florida and Canada.

As a young woman she sailed and learned to fly before she had her driver’s license. In 1951 Betty moved to Port Huron where she worked for the Women’s Benefit Association, and later met and married Dr. Robert Williams. About this same time Dr. Williams moved from Wyandotte and set up his private dental practice in Port Huron, where he practiced until his untimely death in an automobile crash in 1980.

Mrs. Williams was a member of First Presbyterian Church for several decades, where she served as a deacon and an elder. She also played bridge with a dedicated group for many years.

Betty is survived by two sons: Robert Campbell Williams of Fort Gratiot, and Dr. John Walker Williams of Chicago; her oldest son, David Lynne Williams, died on March 3, 2001. Betty is also survived by her sister Shirley Brodigan of Amherst, Massachusetts, her niece, Amy Brodigan, and several cousins.

She was very happy with her life in Port Huron and loved her church, her home on the lake, her neighbors, her family and friends, and especially her close friends Donna and Roger Taylor. She was also grateful for the caring staff at Barss Residential, where she spent the last 6 years of her life.

Funeral visitation will 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Family prefers donations be made to one of the non-profits significant in Betty’s life, the International Symphony Orchestra or the First Presbyterian Church.
