Benes, Agnes (Nancy)

July 11th, 1923 to April 23rd, 2021

Nancy (Agnes) Henderson Goodsir Benes, 97, of Port Huron, passed away peacefully Friday, April 23, 2021.

She was born in Kinross, Scotland and immigrated to the United States via Canada with her family when she was a toddler. She was a long-time resident of Port Huron and previously lived in West Bloomfield and Southfield where she raised her family of five children.

Nancy grew up in Detroit and went to business school. During, her time at school, she would sometimes miss a class with her girlfriends and go to live Frank Sinatra concerts. Nancy was a true bobbysoxer.

She held various secretarial positions at law firms prior to her marriage to Arnold J. Benes, an executive at Detroit Edison. They enjoyed many wonderful journeys over the years, including Scotland, Italy and the continental United States and favorite freighter trips on the Great Lakes.

Nancy loved to play bridge and enjoyed winning. Also, our mom loved Allsorts candies, bridge mix and of course Saunders Hot Fudge Sundaes. Nancy included needlework, beautiful embroidered tablecloths and baby quilts as her creative past times. She was a long-time member of Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church and served on the Altar Guild. She made many friends there and enjoyed serving the congregation.

Most importantly, she never failed to have a conversation with her children or grandchildren to listen and offer her straightforward advice. “It will be alright, honey.” There were many family trips over the years including wonderful vacations at Blackstone Lake in Ontario.

Nancy is survived by her four children, David Bennis, Christine Driscoll, Carol (Fred) Durst and Jane (Steve) Denton; grandchildren, Jennifer, Sarah, Emily, Thad, Ann, Elizabeth, William, Layne and Trevor; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Arnold; their eldest daughter, Cynthia Margaret (Frank) Howland; and son-in-law, Mark Driscoll.

Her family will sorely miss her.

A memorial service is being planned for early fall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Port Huron.
