David L Benedict
December 28th, 1925 to January 13th, 2013
David L. Benedict, 87, died Saturday, January 13, 2013 in Port Huron Hospital, due to Congestive Heart Failure. He went home to be with the Lord and his beloved wife, Marie, who he was married to for 61 years.
He was born December 28, 1925 in Port Huron, and was a lifelong area resident. David married Marie C. Cocco on May 21, 1951 in St. Stephens Catholic Church. He graduated from Port Huron High School and attended St. Clair County Community College and Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Philippines. He was Honorable Discharged in 1945 with a rank of Sergeant. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and sailing. He constructed his first sail bout at age 12 and was a member of the Lighthouse Sailing Yacht Club during his early years. He was continually thankful for his many blessings and always tried to see the good in others. He was a father and pal to many that he encountered during his lifetime. He was a devoted husband and a tremendous father to his two children, Mike and Cindy. He was tremendously proud of his two children, and did everything to ensure their success in life. He loved to party with his family and their friends, and was always ready to “go and have a good time”. He remained forever young his entire life. David worked for many years in the marine business as a marine mechanic and manager. He retired from EOC of Port Huron as a weatherization specialist.
One David’s favorite sayings was “If I can’t laugh, you may as well put me in a box.” Many people labeled him as a true gentleman and a classy act. If he could not bring a smile to someone’s face after just knowing them for five minutes, something was majorly wrong.
The family would like the people that knew him to always remember the smiles and laughter he brought to them. He touched so many people that it would be very difficult to count. He always will be remembered as a remarkable person for having a gift from God to bring smiles to people’s face, those he knew and hardly knew.
This photo was taken in David’s backyard at his fish cleaning station, where he was about to clean a King Salmon for dinner that he and his son recently caught on Lake Huron.
David is survived by his children, son Attorney David Michael Benedict of Port Huron, and daughter Cindy Benedict, of Laguna Niguel, California. Several extended family, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, his father Attorney James W. Benedict and mother, Lucille Levasseur, and two brothers, William and James Benedict.
Private funeral services have taken place, based on David’s wishes. A celebration of his beautiful life will be held at a later date.
